Suspense is a cliffhanger, which results into leaving the target audience on the edge, who are unaware of what is to be seen next.
Suspense can also be a visceral effect, which affects the target audience physically, such as hugging a pillow or a person and screaming. Many movies watched use a range of false plateu, which basically gives the false impression that something terribly wrong is going to occur.

Build up to big event.
Makes you sit on the edge of your seat.
Scary music > engages the audience.
Audience knows something that the character's dont know.
Cliff hanger > we're left on the edge (Good way to end and opening...?)
Visceral effect > Makes you hold on to your pillow, bite your nails, heavy breathing and etc.
